These are the “winners” from an online competition in which artists were to depict manifestations of Hope for Health Care Reform, Workers’ Rights, and a Green Economy under the Obama administration.  I really want to love what the artists have done, but I just can’t get behind some of these.

I Guess We Did

I Guess We Did

This catch-phrase drives me nuts, by the way. O-Dogs won the election with a message for the future. “Yes We Can” had everything to do with what our country will accomplish over the next 8 years if the country pulls together. “Yes We Did” cannibalizes that phrase into simply an excuse to get drunk and take credit for other people’s accomplishments. Example: “Yes We Can encourage artists to create depictions of hope for our country” versus “Yes We Did win an art competition with a painting of eight hands without thumbs that fails to color within the lines.” No, We didn’t… and you can keep the credit on that one all for yourself.

Liberty Floats

Liberty Floats

I call this one “Liberty in a Sea of… Narcolepsy, Tourette’s syndrome, et al.” Notice this artist chose to skip over Hypochondria in his sea of afflictions. Good choice, Picasso.

Bottle o' Hope

Bottle o' Hope

I just don’t get this one… way too complex.

Health is Ill

Health is Ill

I picture an old woman making this statement in a leather jacket and shades with her arms crossed, trying to look like Run DMC. Doesn’t quite capture that militant-cool motif. If this country is so ill, how come it’s only getting a band-aid? How ‘bout some surgery, or Tums, or something?

Energy Frolic

Energy Frolic

This one is my favorite. There are so many ways to go here… First of all, it looks a lot like some Three Little Pigs images I remember from childhood (that makes us consumers the Wolves). On the other hand, the frolicking-Oil little piggy has cloven hooves and fiery eyes, which helps explain why the frolicking-Smokestack piggy is screaming bloody murder. My only complaint is that I don’t quite see what we’re supposed to be hoping for… futuristic industrial smoke stacks that actually clear away the evil red smog? Trees that deforest themselves and run out on us?

(Even more of these gems here.)

Soviet Realism Comes to America

Well, not quite, but American artists are hard at work at establishing Obama’s Cult of Personality.  Artofobama.com  has found an extreme example of the sometimes uplifting, increasingly disturbing and always entertaining world of Obama-inspired art

You see, the symbolism of Obamas nakedness obiously resonates with the current bear market blah blah blah
